RayGen has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with US geothermal developer Blacktail Energy Holdings

Solar and geothermal are often seen as separate paths to clean power. In El Paso, Texas, we have the chance to show what they can do together.
RayGen has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with US geothermal developer Blacktail Energy Holdings. The agreement will integrate our PV Ultra solar and Thermal Hydro long-duration storage technologies into Blacktail’s planned hybrid energy hub. The project spans 4,480 contiguous acres of Blacktail Acreage in El Paso County. It is part of a contemplated 1,220 MW hub combining geothermal, solar, long-duration storage and natural gas.
The need is real. The Borderplex region is home to more than 2.5 million people, and demand for power is rising with Fort Bliss, residential growth and an emerging data centre corridor.
“The Borderplex region requires firm, reliable, and clean energy to support critical defense assets, residential growth, and emerging data centre developments,” said Joe Navar, Chief Executive Officer of Blacktail Energy. “By combining our geothermal development program and Organic Rankine Cycle power generation capabilities with RayGen's PV Ultra and Thermal Hydro storage, we are engineering a differentiated, multi-asset generation asset. Under our #GoodEnergy campaign, we are committed to building infrastructure that strengthens regional power reliability, prioritizes local economic participation, and creates durable value for our community and investors.”
RayGen CEO Richard Payne added: “RayGen’s PV Ultra and Thermal Hydro technologies were built to deliver dispatchable renewable power wherever the grid needs it most. The Blacktail Acreage’s strong solar resource and position next to growing industrial and urban demand make it an ideal place to demonstrate that value. Blacktail’s geothermal and ORC expertise is highly complementary to our storage and generation platform, enabling a unique technical integration between the two systems. We look forward to advancing this project toward financial close.”
A Joint Technical Working Group will explore how the two systems can work together. This includes ORC system integration and efficiency gains across both the geothermal and Thermal Hydro applications via the sharing of hot and cold thermal resources.
The partners are targeting an initial RayGen deployment of approximately 40–50 MW of PV Ultra and 20–30 MW of ORC capacity and 24-hours of storage, with room to scale.
