Generation
Concentrated PV Delivering High-Efficiency Power & Heat
Like traditional solar, RayGen generates electricity using the photoelectric effect. But our system is 2,000x more powerful.
The system uses wireless dual-axis tracking mirrors to concentrate the equivalent of 1,000 suns onto a central receiver of modest height (45m).
The receiver contains an array of photovoltaic modules which convert sunlight into electricity at almost twice the efficiency of traditional solar.
During operation our modules are continually cooled by circulating water through the rear of the modules. As a result, for every 1MWh of electricity generated, we capture 2MWh of thermal energy in the form of 90°C hot water.
Storage
Long-Duration Energy Storage
A hot and cold reservoir underpin RayGen’s long-duration energy storage application. The hot water reservoir is charged by transferring the co-generated heat captured from the rear of RayGen’s concentrated photovoltaic modules. The cold water reservoir is charged using a high-efficiency industrial chiller. When electricity is required from storage, a working fluid is vaporised by the hot water to spin the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), generating synchronous electricity. The working fluid is then re-condensed by the cold water to go through the cycle again.

Our fully closed-loop system means each water reservoir is only filled once. The covered and well-insulated pits see negligible water or heat loss during operations. Using water as our storage medium underpins the incredibly low incremental cost of extending storage duration from 8 to 48+ hours.
The complete system is fully modular and customisable, from the amount of PV Ultra generation to the size of ORCs, chillers and thermal storage.

The solution helps data centres significantly reduce their reliance on strained power and water networks. It is fully closed-loop and consumes no water in operation, making it ideal for water-constrained locations and for data-centre operators focused on meeting sustainability commitments.
