Project Overview

The Yadnarie renewable energy facility, based 7km west of Cleve, is an important project that will provide long-term energy storage for South Australia.

The development proposes to utilise RayGen’s unique proprietary PV Ultra (solar cogeneration) and thermal hydro (electro-thermal storage) technology and will become the latest commercial scale deployment of this technology following RayGen’s successful demonstration at Carwarp in Victoria.

In July 2025, Yadnarie was acquired by AGL from Photon Energy Group, signalling the next phase in the project. ASX-listed AGL Energy is a leading integrated energy company operating Australia’s largest electricity generation portfolio within the National Electricity Market and servicing over 4 million energy and telecommunications customers. Both AGL and Photon are strategic investors in RayGen.

Project Size

The development in Yadnarie is a facility with 150MW of solar generation, 90MW grid connection and 720 MWh of storage, equivalent to 8 hours of dispatchable energy.

Electricity will be supplied to the national electricity grid via a connection to the existing Yadnarie substation or existing 132kV transmission lines.

The project will save 750,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum.

Project Status

Yadnarie received development approval in June 2025, clearing the way for the next phase of the project, which will be deployed in stages.

The first stage – one block of 50MW Solar, 30MW
grid-connection and at least eight hours of storage
– is anticipated to be commissioned during 2028. Commissioning of the final stage – two additional blocks of 100MW solar, 60MW grid connection and up to 12 hours of storage – is anticipated by 2030.

Project Location

The Yadnarie project is located between Cleve and Rudall on land south of the Birdseye Highway and southwest of Yadnarie substation (Google Maps). Along with natural land features, retention of vegetation and infrastructure setbacks, the subject land comprises 1,530 hectares. The land is bounded by the Birdseye Highway to the north, Pine Corner Road to the west, Broadview Road (in part) to the east and Price Road to the south.
