Project Overview

The Yadnarie renewable energy facility, based seven kilometres west of Cleve, is an important project that will provide long-term energy storage to South Australia. The development proposes to utilise RayGen’s unique proprietary PV Ultra (solar cogeneration) and Thermal Hydro (electro-thermal storage) technology and will become the first commercial scale deployment of this technology, following RayGen’s successful technology demonstration at Carwarp in Victoria.

The proponent of the project is Photon Energy Group – a worldwide group with global headquarters in The Netherlands and renewable energy projects in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Italy, Hungary and Australia. Since establishing the Australian office in 2012, Photon Energy Group has commissioned five renewable energy projects down under.

Project Size

The development in Yadnarie is a facility with 150MW of solar generation, 90MW grid connection and at least 720 MWh of storage, equivalent to 8 hours of dispatchable energy.

Electricity will be supplied to the national electricity grid via a connection to the existing Yadnarie substation or existing 132kV transmission lines.

The project will save 750,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum.

Project Status

Photon Energy and RayGen have undertaken detailed investigations to inform the project design. The two parties and other stakeholders anticipate submitting a comprehensive development application during the 3rd quarter of 2024.

The Yadnarie project is expected to be deployed in stages. The first stage – one block of 50MW Solar, 30MW grid-connection and at least 8 hours storage – will be commissioned in Q2 2027. The final stage – additional two blocks of 100MW Solar, 60MW grid connection and up to 12 hours storage – will be commissioned by 2030.

Project Location

The Yadnarie project is located between Cleve and Rudall on land south of the Birdseye Highway and southwest of Yadnarie substation (Google Maps). Along with natural land features, retention of vegetation and infrastructure setbacks, the subject land comprises 1,530 hectares. The land is bounded by the Birdseye Highway to the north, Pine Corner Road to the west, Broadview Road (in part) to the east and Price Road to the south.
